Is Botox Safe? On April 15, 2002, the FDA approved Botox for cosmetic treatment of the frown lines.  When used for cosmetic treatments, it is used in extremely small amounts and does not spread throughout the body.

What areas are most commonly treated?  The most common areas for the application of Botox are the frown lines, the horizontal forehead lines, and the crow’s feet (the lines and wrinkles around the eyes).

How painful is the procedure? Very little discomfort is noticed by most. Anesthesia is not required. Most gauge the pain from none to a slight stinging.

How soon do I see results and how long does it last?  Results are normally seen within a few days. The results generally last 4-6 months. Your wrinkles may be less prominent after Botox treatment because your muscles may be somewhat “trained” to be in the more relaxed state. As the wrinkles reappear, you will have to repeat Botox treatment.

How long is recovery? There is generally no recovery period. You can go back to your daily activities. We ask that you refrain from exercise for the next 48 hours  after the treatment and do not massage or manipulate the treatment sites. This helps prevent the migration of Botox into unintended muscles.

What are the possible side-effects?  The most common side effect of Botox treatment is temporary bruising. Another side effect is headache, however, this is a rare occurrence and is usually gone within 24-48 hours

Many wrinkles are actually creases that have been worn into the skin by making the same expression thousands of times. These expression lines, often called laugh lines, frown lines or crow’s feet, are due to the contraction of the muscles in the affected area. Stopping the muscles from contracting will soften the wrinkles. Botox® does just that.
